Google is preparing everyone for the future of smart home devices Leave a comment

Smart home device manufacturers are all on board with a new standard called Matter, which will allow all of your devices to communicate with one another, and Google is now aiming to get developers on board with that goal. It is also renaming its smart home ecosystem Google Home, which will include everything from smart speakers and screens to Android and Nest security gadgets.

Back at Google I/O, the search giant revealed that it will be updating its Nest devices to meet the new smart home standard. However, in order for buyers to fully utilise those gadgets once Matter is released, Google will also require developers.

Matter arose from the Project Connect Home over IP, or CHiP. Google was one of its early investors, but Apple, Amazon, and others have also expressed interest in its development. Matter employs a mix of Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth LE, and Thread, a low-power mesh networking technology that has long been used in Google’s smart home products.

Google also stated that it is incorporating Matter directly into Android by supporting the protocol through Google Play Services, which will help to increase adoption of the Matter standard. This will make it easier to connect new Matter devices via wifi and Thread. More controls are also expected to appear in Android’s relocated device shortcuts later next year, which were moved from the Power Menu to Quick Settings in Android 12.
